40th Anniversary CABL Conference 2017
CABL celebrated its 40th Anniversary in style from April 27-30th at the Marina Del Rey Marriott during the CABL Conference. The event featured MCLEs, including “The Presidential Showcase – A Conversation: 25 Years After the LA Riots” featuring Connie Rice and Carl Douglass, a Welcome Reception, Judicial Luncheon, President’s Reception: A Walk Through the Decades, and the Installation & Awards Gala. During the Judicial Luncheon, CABL honored Hon. Teri Jackson, Hon. Huey P. Cotton, Hon. Eric Taylor and Hon. Allen Webster. Nearly 300 people joined CABL at its Installation & Awards Gala where the 2017-2018 Board was installed, along with 2017-2018 President Kwixuan Maloof. CABL bid farewell to its outgoing 2016-2017 President, Camille Y. Townsend. We also honored Hon. Kevin Brazile as Judge of the Year, AEG Job Shadowing Program, and W. Gerald Flannery, Jr. CEO and President of Hyundai Motor America. Finally, CABL honored its Affiliate of the Year, the Black Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, Inc. CABL Legislative Day
On March 19th and 20th, CABL visited Sacramento where it held its board meeting and met with the Governor’s Office as well as several legislators including, Assembly Member Christopher Holden, Assembly Member Reginald Jones-Sawyer, Assembly Member Tony Thurmond, Assembly Member Shirley Weber, Assembly Member Eloise Reyes, Senator Steven Bradford and Assembly Member Autumn Burke. We also hosted a reception honoring CABL Past President Phyllis Marshall with the Public Service Award, as well as Senator Holly Mitchell with the inaugural Wille J. Brown, Jr. Advocacy Award. During their visit, CABL was introduced on the Senate Floor! Kudos to Legislative Chairs Melinda Murray and Dianne Jackson McClean, as well as Willie Manual Bar Association Past President Shanae Buffington for their hard work. CABL Annual Reception at the State Bar of California Meeting
CABL was proud to acknowledge its honorees at the CABL Annual Reception at the State Bar of California Meeting in San Diego on September 30, 2016. Honorees Regina A. Petty, Hon. John Houston and Chris Chambers Goodman all display a commitment to our community and diversity in the legal profession. CABL and the CABL Judicial Section honored Hon. Eric C. Taylor for his contributions as a historic two-term chair of the California Judges Association. CABL was proud to honor these individuals along with nearly 75 CABL guests, overlooking the ocean and beautiful San Diego sunset, while enjoying live jazz provided by Earl B. Northern California Meet and Greet Reception
On Saturday, September 10th, CABL held a its Northern California Meet and Greet Reception at the home of CABL President-Elect Kwixuan Maloof and Regina Maloof. About 50 people gathered for fabulous food, wine hosted by Oakland Wine and Food Festival and wonderful company. We especially want to thank our sponsors FindLaw and Oakland Wine and Food Festival. A special thank you to Regina Ana Kwixuan Maloof for offering their home to us and hosting.
Southern California Meet and Greet Reception
The California Association of Black Lawyers held its Southern California Meet and Greet Reception on June 24, 2016 in Ladera Heights. Approximately 60 lawyers, judges and guest joined for a spectacular event with appetizers, complementary wine and a good time. Job Shadow Program
On June 14, 2016, the California Association of Black Lawyers (CABL) hosted a very dynamic group of high school students during its Job Shadow Program in partnership with AEG. Twenty students from various schools throughout Los Angeles rotated through different court assignments at the Inglewood Courthouse and then had the opportunity for question and answer session with attorneys and judges from different practice areas. The young people were engaged and thoughtful with a plethora of questions! We would like to thank Inglewood Courthouse Presiding Judge Victor Wright for opening up the courthouse and its staff to CABL and all of the volunteers.
