Dear Advocates,

Your California Neighbors need your help to transform law enforcement’s use of force.

Your California Neighbors need your help to transform law enforcement’s use of force. Sadly, every year thousands of civilian complaints are filed against police officers. Those complaints are investigated, by and large, by Internal Affairs but there is glaring community distrust of law enforcement agency internal investigations.

That’s why this year, CABL sponsored AB 797, authored by Dr. Akilah Weber. This statewide legislation will require cities and counties to create independent civilian oversight commissions to investigate physical injuries caused by officers.

AB 797 is founded on a basic truth: an independent investigation requires investigators and attorneys who are impartial and unconnected to the subject of the investigation.

Please, add your letterhead, sign, and upload your letter of support for AB 797 before January 2, 2024. If you will be in Sacramento on January 9, 2024, let us know. You can join us at the state Capitol to rally in support of AB 797!

Please submit your letters ASAP to show solidarity for our movement, and send a copy of your signed letter to me. If you have any questions or need any assistance, don’t hesitate to touch base with me.

Sincerely,
